Emicidin is antioxydant and antihypoxant drug. Ethylmethylhydroxypyridine succinate (an active ingredient of the drug) is a free radical inhibitor with antioxydant, antihypoxant and membrane-protective properties providing therapeutic and preventive effect in various hypoxias.
Mechanism of action includes lipid peroxidation reduction on cellular membrane phospholipid layer, free radical binding, influence over energy metabolism leading to increase in cellular energy level and enhancement of resistance against oxygen defect. After parenteral administration the drug rapidly distributes in animal organs and tissues. It is mainly excreted in urine as metabolites and unchanged drug in trace amount.
